Follow users and Facebook

June 22nd, 2010

Some little improvements to Riderpedia:

  1. The “follow” feature now follows the user and not just the single travel. As a follower, you will be notified of any travel updates of the user being followed. The number of followes is displayed on the travel page and the widget (screenshot n.1)
  2. Updating the travel by email now also updates the wall on Facebook. To enable this option you have to signup with Facebook Connect and provide the offline extended permissions to Rideperdia: click on “Edit travel details” then “Advanced options”, click on “Authorize” (screenshot n.2)
  3. Adding a waypoint is now easier: you can specify the location or just the GPS coordinates (for example copying and pasting from Google Earth or a roadbook). All coordinates formats are supported: Google (es. nnn.mmm,nnn.mmm), degree/decimal minutes (ie. N 45 23.23,E 45 23.23) e degree/minutes/decimal seconds (es. N 45 23 23.23, E 45 23 23.23(screenshot n.3)
  4. Improved import of GPX or KML tracks from GPS devices. In this way you can display on the map the actual ruote you’ve done on the road. To improve the visual effect, it’s possible to hide the red line between the waypoints to: click on “Edit travel details” then “Advanced options”, check “Hide the track” (screenshot n.4)

1. Followers

2. Coordinate GPS

3. Aggiornamento bacheca

4. Nascondere la traccia

Too many deaths on the roads

June 8th, 2010

During last week-end, as much as 27 riders found death. Definitely too many deaths:  numbers like this make you wonder if you’ll be the next one.

Before conceiving possible solutions that are plainly wrong (see this particulary dumb one), we need to understand HOW the riders die on the roads and WHY motorcycle accidents do happen. As far as I know, detailed statistics are not available. The only reliable source of information, police reports, is too often incomplete as is often lacking details allowing comprehension of accidents dynamics. Also, seems that nation-wide statistics about motorcycle accidents are not available as of today.

Solutions proposed before understanding WHERE is the problem are undoubtly pointless -  bad roads? edgy guard rails? Blind car drivers? While these solutions do not spot the problem they are also potentially dangerous as they do lead to think that the problem at stake has been addressed correctly and  “better protection for the rider” has been obtained – that’s not true! As a matter of fact, mandatory protective dresses for motorcycle drivers and passengers can lower the injuries in case of accident, which *is* different from preventing the accident itself!

Africa, Vita e Gioia

April 15th, 2010

“Africa, Vita e Gioia” (Africa, Life and Joy) is the last project of Georges Dal Santo to circumnaviagate Africa, “the intent is to see children smile” says the Georges.
Georges usually travels alone, but for this long and dangerous expedition (about 40,000 km), he’d like to put together a group of 3 or 4 riders and a support van.
He’d also like to include a charity mission for his travel.
Georges is looking for team mates with at least 100 days available (and eager for adventure) as well as a charity organization that wants to entrust a mission to George’s team.
The departure is scheduled for November (back in February), the route is not yet finalized, but the intent is to minimize the number of border crossings and make the most of the available time.
